Deaths in Sri Lanka

Making arrangements after the death of an American Citizen

When a U.S. citizen dies abroad (in the absence of an immediate family member), a Consular Officer notifies the U.S. citizen's family and informs them about options and costs. Costs for preparing and returning remains to the United States may be high and must be paid by the family. More information (Sri Lanka)...

The Embassy also prepares a Consular Report of Death Abroad based on the local death certificate. This Report can be used as proof of death in most legal proceedings in the United States.

 Getting Funds

Should you lose all your money and other financial resources, Consular Officers can help you contact your family, bank, or employer to arrange for them to send you money.
