Arrest Information

When you visit a foreign country you are subject to its laws.  Please note that many areas of Sri Lankan and Maldivian law are significantly different from those in the United States and may not afford the protections available to the individual under U.S. law. Penalties for breaking the law can be more severe than in the United States for similar offenses.

If you are arrested, you should ask the authorities to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. Although the Embassy cannot get you out of jail, Consular Officers can work to protect your legitimate interests and ensure that you are not discriminated against. Consular officers can also provide a list of local attorneys (366 Kb, pdf), visit you, and contact your family and friends.

Persons violating Sri Lankan and Maldivian laws, even unknowingly, may be expelled, arrested or imprisoned. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Sri Lanka and Maldives are severe, and convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines. Engaging in illicit sexual conduct with children or using or disseminating child pornography in a foreign country is a crime, prosecutable in the United States.  For more information visit http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1467.html
