April 7, 2014
U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Michele Sison sponsored the first-ever US Ambassador’s Cup Cricket Tournament in Kandy this past weekend, with teams from American Corner youth groups from Kandy and in Jaffna playing for the US Ambassador’s Cup trophy. This six-aside tournament drew two teams each from the Kandy and the Jaffna American Corners and provided an ideal setting for developing sportsmanship and camaraderie among Sri Lankan young people.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Sison, flanked by the Honorable Mayor of Kandy, Mahendra Ratwatte, commented, “The US Embassy is proud to be the sponsor of such a high-spirited event which also promotes mutual understanding among Sri Lankan youth. These players are a great example of ‘sports diplomacy’ as a means of building a stronger future for Sri Lanka through youth empowerment.”
The Jaffna A team was the winner in Saturday’s Ambassador’s Cup, with the Kandy A team as runner up. The U.S. Embassy plans to expand these goodwill matches by developing a Youth Cricket League to also include young people from throughout Sri Lanka. The event was organized by the American Center in Colombo with the cooperation of the Kandy Municipal Council.
