U.S. Medical Equipment for Distribution to Hospitals in Vavuniya Arrives in Colombo

Colombo, July 31, 2009
: 26 containers of medical equipment and supplies donated by the United States Pacific Command and valued at $1.6 million have cleared customs and were received yesterday by the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health.  According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed on July 10, 2009, by the two countries, the goods will be quickly transferred to hospitals in the Northern provinces to aid those still awaiting return to their homes.  Maj. Jose Orozco, Chief of the Office for Defense Cooperation at the US Embassy, Sgt. Peter Lettieri of the Defense Attache’s Office, and Dr. Sarath Weerabandara, Director of the Medical Supplies Division of the Ministry of Health, are shown in the center of the photo with assisting Sri Lankan and US officials.
