Southern Illinois University Provides English Teacher Training at BCIS

Colombo – March 14, 2007: English teachers in Sri Lanka now have access to a unique resource at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies in Colombo. English Language Fellow Kane Gilmour, a doctoral candidate from Southern Illinois University specializing in Sri Lankan English, is hosting a series of programs called Teaching English in the 21st Century.
The program for Saturday, March 17 will be The Internet and Other Resources for English Teachers. The two hour course will start at 1:00 PM at the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies in the BMICH compound. Space is available for 200 teachers and the attendance fee is only Rs. 100.
The English Language Fellow Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and exists to send experts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and Teacher Training to countries around the world.
“The ELF program has been a great success in India,” said Ambassador Robert Blake “and I’m proud to be able to provide an English teaching expert like Kane Gilmour as part of a broader effort to improve English teaching in Sri Lanka.”
